Did you know that the St. Louis Zoo houses a Cheetah Breeding Center? 🐆 St. Louis Zoo River’s Edge Cheetah Breeding Center welcomed a litter of five cheetah cubs that are now making their public debut. Asha, Bozzie, Chirpa, Milani and Wickett–named after the Ewoks of Endor–are the first successful cheetah births at the Zoo in more than seven years. The cubs were born on May 5th to first-time parents Cora, age 4, and Vader, age 8. Over 60 cubs have been born at the Zoo’s Cheetah Breeding Center ever since it first began its reproductive research and breeding in 1974. Julie Hartell-DeNardo, the Zoo’s Kevin Beckmann Curator of Carnivores, says the cheetah species faces a high risk of extinction. “There’s probably about 7,000 left…their population number has dropped quite dramatically in the last 50 years,” Hartell-DeNardo said. “So, a lot of the conservation work that we do with our partners is important for the species to continue to be around for a very long time.” “We only make breeding pairs when we are recommended to do so based on the genetics and the need of the population… It’s really important for us to have these animals here, to take great care of them and make sure that they’re healthy and well cared for. But [that] they’re also very good representatives for their species in the wild, and the efforts that we put towards making sure that this species is also found in the wild places for a long time.” If residents would like to visit “Cora’s Quints,” the cheetahs frequently have access to their public habitat between 9 and 10 a.m. But, the Zoo says there are no guaranteed times when the cubs will be visible. 📸: Dan Ritter, St. Louis Zoo 📹: Paola Rodriguez and Dan Ritter, St. Louis Zoo #stlouismo #stlnews #STL #zoo #cheetah
