Here’s 5 things I did that not everybody may think about to get a job in sports 1. My resume, portfolio, cover letter, etc all matched. I wanted to show teams I would be a great fit to help elevate their brand, because I had established my own. 2. I was on 1-2 networking calls a week my senior year. I spent hours upon hours finding people on LinkedIn, setting up zooms, and asking them real questions. Not just “tell me about your journey.” I asked them what they loved about their job, what they hated, what they’d do differently, what is the most imporant thing to look for when applying for team jobs. I asked if they could go over my portfolio and give me any advance. Honest, actual advice. I also maintained a relationship with them after the fact. I wanted to make sure I was making real, genuine relationships. 3. Didn’t get a job? Ask for feedback after. How could I interview better? What advice would you give me on strengthening my portfolio. I wanted to be better and this shows the initiative to do so. 4. Do the little things well. Communicate. Show up on time. Be polite. Work hard. Show curiosity to learn. Admit to mistakes and be better next time. This goes such a long way. All my interns who did this, now have full time jobs in sports. It was one of the things that hinted to me they were serious and wanted to go the distance. 5. Talk to people! I still struggle with this. I’m usually so busy, that I assume everybody else is on the sidelines and doesn’t have the time to talk to me. Introduce yourself. It doesn’t have to be a full blown conversation. #womeninsports #workinginsports #sportstiktok #sportsjobs #smsports
