Same thing you should do at any position applies to ride alongs… show up early, don’t be a shitbag, aim to learn as much as you possibly can, get the fuck after it, share a laugh and a cup of coffee with the guys every chance you get, make time for your traditions (get that game of corn hole, movie time, or game of pool in), and lastly make sure everybody goes home. If you do that for 30 years you will be good at the most fun and rewarding job there is and it will be an easy 30 years. Pay attention to the culture too, know what the organization is before you commit to it. As an officer I never let my guys wash the rigs and dishes without me, I ride the damn truck and I eat the food, if they aren’t lazy I’m not gonna be either. You can’t be a pushover as an officer but you can’t let them see you as a dictator either, you’re not only their boss in this job you’re their brother, you’re a part of the family they spend more time with than their wife and kids, so be a good family member. If the culture doesn’t reflect that find you a new place to seek employment. These are guys you’ll be going with into buildings that kill firemen every day across this nation. Make sure your people give a damn before you’re setting off your pass under a pile of rubble.
