Since there's so much misinformation here ... English used to be almost German; it's originally a germanic language. But Europe being Europe of course the French speaking Normans invaded, conquered, and became the elite upper class; so more and more there was a crossover with French words, spellings, and grammar entering English. So we don't really speak English, we speak Frenglish.

if you ever have questions about why english is so weird, you can google the etymology. the k is silent because it used to be pronounced in Old English! i googled "silent k etymology" but you can ask for specific words too! 🥰

When the printing press was coming into wide use, the k was pronounced. 3-400 years ago, the k was pronounced less and less until it was dropped, but the spelling remained.
it's similar to the way は and へ still have exceptional pronunciations when used as particles, but they don't sound the way they're spelled.

everything has a reason the k in those words used to be pronounced until sometime in the 16th/17th century where it was dropped but the spelling remained the same

I know the silent G in front of N (gnome, gnostic, etc) comes from Greek. I’m not sure if silent K is the same or not. But yeah, English is about 5-6 languages mixed together.

I learned that in the Middle Ages they said the K bit somehow over time the pronunciation changed but not the spelling.
