As someone who makes $100K & has benefits and still works a second side hustle in NYC, $55K is laughable & also illegal without offering overtime pay.

thank you for saying this! The trope that we have to suffer through work and settle for crumbs for wages in order to gain experience to climb up, is SO toxic, how do people live off of that; and it’s not even just this job it’s so many entry level jobs. Some people with college degrees are struggling to find jobs that pay well, and with the cost of living going up every single year and wages staying the same it’s insane. And older adults be like “I gOt pAid $7 aN HoUr wHeN I wAs yOur aGe” like pleeeeessseeeeee stop how ama i supposed to live off of that?!??

I was a booker before and it was my full time job, a lot of work goes into bookings and emails won’t end at 6pm. I also doubt that all interviews end at 6pm sharp. I was also a EA before, it’s even hard to have an actual lunch 😅.

Hustler culture serves capitalism because it brainwashes workers into believing that their lack of upward mobility is not because of an oppressive economic system but rather because a lack of wanting it bad enough. It’s a modern version of "Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" and it was SO disappointing to see her defending and doubling down on that belief.

55k a year with no benefits isn’t even really a living wage where I live in Iowa. The roles she outlined don’t leave any option to work a second job, which means that person doesn’t have the option to hustle. The hustle is working that job.

Companies will always pay employees as little as possible. IT’S GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE THEM PAY A LIVING WAGE, BUT OUR GOVERNMENT DOESN’T CARE ABOUT US SO THEY WON’T DO THIS. Minimum Wage should be $25-$30 per hour.

Also another Tidbit - a lot of landlords will not even approve you for an apartment in NYC without making 30 x the monthly rent as your base compensation which likely leaves you with no apartment options so where is this person living?

I’m also not a fan of ppl defending this egregiously low paying job by mentioning that she (the founder) is a black woman trying to make huge changes in an industry. Therefore I should give her grace to try to take advantage of ppl in this oppressive capitalistic way?? At the end of the day, no matter the race/gender/etc, if you can’t afford to pay a fair wage for the work and experience you are looking for, then you can’t afford to hire someone else quite yet 🤷🏽♀️
