SMOOTH MUSCLE TISSUE - ‼️‼️ Smooth muscle is a specialized tissue that is not under conscious control, i.e., it is involuntary muscle. Unlike striated muscle (skeletal and cardiac muscle), the myofilaments in smooth (nonstriated) muscle are less organized and their arrangement does not appear as striations under the microscope. Smooth muscle is adapted to allow prolonged periods of contraction without fatiguing. Contraction is usually regulated by the autonomic nervous system, by both sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. Additionally, contractions may be controlled by hormones released from the posterior pituitary gland (e.g., oxytocin controls uterine smooth muscle during childbirth) or from the adrenal gland (e.g., epinephrine and norepinephrine).‼️‼️‼️ Smooth muscle cells form sheets or aggregated bundles of muscle found in most tissues of the body. It can be found in the walls of hollow tubes (such as blood vessels and the intestines), sacs (such as the stomach, gallbladder, and bladder), sphincters, skin (arrector pili), and the intrinsic muscles of the eye.‼️‼️‼️ Since smooth muscle is found almost everywhere in the body, it ultimately controls functions of all organs and systems. Through its contraction and relaxation, smooth muscle regulates physiological functions such as digestion, respiration, reproduction, and blood flow. 🤩🤩 save this for your next study day 📚 follow for more anatomy tips 😃 #anatomy #smoothmuscle #muscle #anatomyandphysiology #3danatomy #LearnOnTikTok #physicaltherapy
