@littleblossomdarling: do you know of any other victorian myths that could be disproven by asking a couple- fairly obvious questions? i loved researching this! i’ve had people ask me about fainting couches before- and had no good answer but, as soon i looked into it, it seemed so obvious? why it the world would there be a couch specifically for fainting? that makes no sense at all! #faintingcouch #victorianera #myth #corset #fashionhistory
its somehow funnier to have a whole separate piece of furniture to nap and relax in that isnt the bed because the maids/society were like "Nope, not allowed to use this its done for today"

I thought it meant they felt faint, not like actually passing out. But it makes more sense that it’s just like a sofa or recliner- a piece of furniture to take a nap 😅

I don’t dispute what you are saying in the slightest. That said, why do you think there’s the little blip in the data in about 1900?

Isn’t the myth of corsets snapping bones because the design used whale bone as ribbing and if handled incorrectly it would snap them?

I always found the idea of corsets causing women to faint funny… because I purposely wear corsets to keep myself from fainting due to my health condition pots.

I'm just imagining some servants following the lady sound at all hours of the day and panicking when she said she feels faint 😂 maybe even dropping her because of the panic

Wonder if it also had to do with Tuberculosis (aka consumption) so that they could still be comfortable but be part of teas?

I think so many of these “fainting spells” women were rumored to have were undiagnosed POTs or dysautonomia of some kind
