Please know ball. If a team downs a punt, until the whistle blows, the returning team has the right to choose whether to let the play continue or take it where it was touched. Ref decides when that window is closed. Play tot he whistle

To those that don’t know the rule… if the defender touches the ball before the return man, it’s still a live ball and if the returner happens to bobble it and lose it without controlling it, it is not a fumble. The second guy to touch the ball should’ve picked it up instead of slide touching it. The play isn’t dead yet.

Nobody here knows the first touching rule. When the punt team "downs" the ball it's technically illegal. No matter what the ball will return to that spot, but if the return team picks it up, like in this video, it is live.

The player did touch it but he has to have full control of the ball for it to be considered “downed”. Full control would be both hands on, he tried to use the ground for control
