Honestly go on YouTube and TikTok and start picking up things on there and just power thru till graduation, when you get into a salon watch the other stylist, don’t sit down: watch them foil, watch them mix, ask questions, listen to the consultations, be attentive. I didn’t think I was gonna do hair when I was in school, but you just have to keep pushing forward and eventually you will get it and you’ll love it. But you have to work hard and don’t give up. ❤️

I went to cosmetology school in 2006. 1600 hours were required then. Cosmo school was hell. Sooo catty. Girls stealing hair tools, instructors being rude, etc. Cosmo school is so you pass state board, not too much learning. Study for state board and you’ll learn more after!

I went to cosmetology school for 6 months before I left. They fired a teacher so we literally stared at eachother and waited for a teacher to have time to come and teach us. We also were not allowed to have our phones on in the building and couldn’t miss more than 3 days or we’d be kicked out. 8-5 five days a week, huge waste of money. I hope you find your motivation because I still love doing hair but refuse to go through that again😅

before I graduated I really focused on just taking clients and getting my hours, not missing days. My school didn’t even help us with state board, they just wanted us to take clients so the school could make money

Beauty school gets you the absolute bare minimum knowledge, you have to do learning on your own. School will get you a license, from there start at a Supercuts, they do in-depth classes on everything, stay there for 6 months and then leave!!!!!! Do not get stuck!!

If the goal is to get a bomb apprenticeship focus on professionalism your resume, get great shampoos and blowouts learn and truly understand color theory. That will get you hired and through an apprenticeship, they will teach you the rest.

I graduated from an aveda school in 2015 so i hear you, but keep on pushing through. I feel like now though with sooooo much online stylists giving great education i would binge that and try to practice techniques you learn through them. If you’d like I’ can send you a dm with the ones i like🫶🏽

Focus on getting all the clients that you can. You will learn more once you go into a salon.

It gets better I promise! I went to a very mid level school definitely felt like I didn’t know what I was doing after graduating. Research what salon you want to go to after. Make sure they have a PAID training program. Way your options with jobs. Feel the vibe make sure it’s a team you’ll feel supported from. The biggest thing I wish I learned while in school was setting boundaries. With clients, with booking and overall life balance. You’ll learn more your first year behind the chair then you did your entire education experience. You got this babe! Keep on keeping on ❤️

My number one advice to anyone wanting to do cosmetology is DO IT AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE. Your education is mostly for passing state board, everything is learned behind the chair as an assistant, taking models, there is so much free education online if you follow the right people.

the only way to learn things is by doing it yourself. schools dont teach anything. ever. if anything get a personal mentor that you look up to instead or look up youtube videos on what you want to learn specifically

Cosmetology school is to get you through state boards. Real life working is where you learn how to do hair. Learn everything you can. Learn your haircuts. I feel like people coming out now do not know how to do basic cutting skills.

I have been in your shoes and it was a really low point in my life as well, I’ve now been a hairstylist for seven years and I love it so much. All I can say is stick it out, it does suck and it is unfair. I was so unsure of my path that I chose when I graduated, best thing I ever did for myself was get an apprenticeship. Three months there taught me more than my entire schooling and I got paid for it! So much in this industry, you have to figure out yourself and rely on yourself for your own education, consistency, client relationship, but you can do it I promise! It’s so worth it

First of all , it doesn’t matter what type of education a person is getting they have burnout towards the end. I experienced it in high school, college, and when getting a masters. It is just part of the process Lots of hard work and stress catches up with you. Fear works itself in there too. Just know it is normal to feel that way. Secondly, school is training. Training. You grow and perfect your skills on the job. I’m a teacher and my fist years teaching I can not count how many times I thought nobody taught me this. On the job learning. In your case I’m sure it is a matter of practice, practice, practice. Good luck. You have got this.

Hi💓 8 year stylist, 3 year salon owner here. Beauty school does suck and only teaches you how to get through state boards unfortunately. Good on you for trying to seek out education for after you graduate! That attitude is what will carry you through this industry💓 If I could go back I would really work on marketing myself, and see how I could stand out in my area. As far as technical skills, making sure you’ve got all the basic cutting foundations down is a good start. Everything from long layers to pixies. Bobs were a tough one for me. Be picky when you choose your salon home. Find someone who can truly mentor you and will give you time to grow and flourish💓 Best of luck to you!
