Japan in 1980 was living in the year 2001. Japan in 2025 is also living in 2001.

So you can still buy clothes that last a lifetime in Japan, not just a few months like in my country. That is not inefficient. That is awesome. I want to buy their tshirts

i can understand the stamp as a signature and all the otherwise outdated machinery used for quality's sake, but i draw the line at using a fax machine in 2025😭

Having fabric and dye that lasts long due to the slowness when making it sounds more efficient than having to buy junk frequently because everybody has abandonded real craft.

I’m in Japan now and am so fascinated by the juxtaposition of convenience & speed and lack of urgency. Like, how virtually everyone stands on escalators to then get on a Shinkansen and be jetted across the country.

To their credit, a fax machine is much more secure than email or a portal that can be hacked. It’s why law firms and hospitals still often have them too

If the result is better quality, then the machine is better, because speed is not the only factor to greatness
The thing I like most about Japan is that they have engrained in their culture to take the time to do things well. Calligraphy, ikebana, kyūdō, etc. Even bentos now, everything is about taking the time to do the thing with heart, patience and precision. To me, that's a much better mentality

People think making things quicker and cheaper is what's better, but the quality of the product and damage to the envorinment is worse through it.

it’s so refreshing when countries / companies ignore the capitalist quantity/efficiency over quality mindset
