I've been dying to make this joke since @yeetusmcfetus69420 left it as a comment on an earlier TikTok. The update: this clip is already a week old. The bandages are off, and I'm healing great. The surgeons managed to save my thigh tattoos! And I don't even have staples to take out because the plastic surgeon who did my TMR also did the closure. (I made a joke about bougie stumps that the vascular surgeon didn't laugh at.) OT and PT haven't had much to do because l'm already a wheelchair user, my home is super accessible, and I've literally been in physio (doing many of the same exercises) since I was six years old. The biggest challenge has been the pain. Because I had a weird, almost manic response to the epidural hydromorphone, I was hesitant to take oral hydromorphone, and I have an SJS-like reaction to Tylenol, so I asked about NSAIDs. For some reason this resulted in me spending my fourth night post-op with NO pain management other than 200 mg of ibuprofen every eight hours -- yes, literally half of the lowest recommended otc dose on the back of a bottle Advil. I also had a terrible nurse who resisted even changing it to every four hours instead of every eight. (In other words, she did not want to give me the lowest recommended dose for a tension headache just four nights after a double amputation!) Unsurprisingly, we spent the next several days chasing the pain, but things are finally feeling better yesterday and today (days eight and nine). Funnily enough, the most helpful thing has been plain ol' ice. The good news on the pain front is that the pain that is the reason for the amputations is gone, so if the TMR procedure works like it's meant to, I should have much less pain in the long term! (But unfortunately TMR is usually quite a bit more painful in the beginning.) Friends have been incredible throughout this whole process. Most of my pals didn't know each other before I threw them together in the "Leg Day" group chat. They keep coming to me individualy to tell me how great my other friends are, and it's like "yeah that's you too! That's what they're all saying about you too!" As wonderful as I already knew they were, I am still so humbled by the care that I've received. I've learned a lot of amazing lessons about community this week. #amputee #trans #joke #surgery #fyp
