Nuance criticism requires TRUE comprehension, objective opinions & statistical analysis to back up a claim! It’s like the gorwls weren’t in AP Lang/Lit or didn’t go to college & it shows….

the downfall of the critique went downhill when Wendy Williams went off air

ive started thinking that this phenomenon has led to a lot of boring and safe art. safe in the sense that its not pushing boundaries. i haven’t quite figured it out yet

this is a great video! one thing i’d like to push back on a bit is the point of a good critic having an objective opinion, i would suggest that rather than an objective opinion, that a good critic understand their bias and how that influences their critique when developing it

my best friend and I get on discord calls and read reviews and discuss them with each other. it's wild how video essays are so popular at the moment but when it's in text form, suddenly it's TOO pretentious.

i also think that the fact that we live in a society where convenience is currency it’s easier to turn to a blanket statement than to pause and consider a different perspective. social media has also generally made people more narcissistic and it’s morphed into a superiority complex where the notion is to jump to self-defense instead of self-perception. oh and can’t forget how privilege is always at work.

I definitely think too many are too personally invested when something is being criticized. Stans think it’s a personal attack. Love this video.

Also I feel like nowadays if someone doesn’t like something, the automatically equate that with it being bad. They are not able to create objective opinions or recognise their bias as others have said. You can dislike something or it “not be for you” and rate it 1⭐️in your personal opinion, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the piece of art, media, literature is bad. People will refuse to accept that something is good or well done in its area, but they personally didn’t like it. So frustrating when trying to read reviews

Even though it’s fun that it’s shareable I think that the letterbox quick review format has prioritized eyeballs, and we don’t get a lot of really good deep explanations for movies and stories as much as we used to. Jokes are fun, but it’s nice to have a space to talk about something in detail and I hope that we don’t lose that.

the very VERY first thing we learned to do in art and writing school ( i have two degrees) was how to critique and it is as far away from "just giving your opinions" as it possibly could be lol

Going to grad school has really informed the way I critique things; there's a difference between saying "in my opinion this art isn't for me" and saying "given the current political climate this art is contributing to authoritarianism"

You are forced to think either in one way or in another, with no space for nuance. I remember that many Italian intellectuals used to engage in long and thoughtful discussions, where ideas were explored with patience and depth. But today it feels much harder

So often I have (or seen others) provide constructive criticism, or just any criticism at all, and get smacked with the title “hater” or “negative”, meanwhile there was no hateful or spiteful connotation or tone, it was simply,,, criticism. People have started to assert that criticizing something or having an opinion different from there’s is bad

I've been wanting to write more about the death of nuance and complexity in how we view anything from art to individuals. No clue why everyone can relate to the idea that every has faults but in any media example, if someone has a fault, they're reduced to "best or worst"

Yes! Also, some opinions are more valuable than others. The internet flattened everything and now you can have people who know zilch on a subject leading the conversation. In the arts it is dangerous of course but it’s deadly when it comes to politics, medicine and science. People refuse to accept that there are experts who have studied things and devoted time to understanding them in a nuanced way.
