@nimcobarako: In our Somali community I have noticed something that I can no longer ignore and the more I pay attention the clearer it becomes to me. There are so many men who insult women who degrade women who claim they are better than women and who behave as though everything is centred around them. For a long time I used to see this as arrogance and superiority but lately I have started to believe that it comes from somewhere else. I actually think it is rooted in jealousy. The more I observe their behaviour the more it makes sense. Women carry an inherent value that does not depend on anything external. A Somali woman does not need money status or achievements to be valuable because her value already exists in who she is. Of course many Somali women go to university build careers and contribute powerfully to their families and communities. But even without those achievements she still holds value as a woman. That value does not need to be earned or proven. It is already there. Men on the other hand are often valued by what they can provide or achieve. They need money or education or position in order to be respected and taken seriously. Society measures their worth by accomplishments. That means if they fall short in those areas they are left with insecurity. And when insecurity grows it often turns into bitterness. So when I see Somali men attacking women belittling them insulting them or trying to place themselves above them I no longer believe it comes from genuine confidence. I see it as a defensive reaction. I see it as jealousy of the natural worth that women hold. It may not even be something they are fully conscious of but it shows in the way they constantly try to pull women down instead of lifting them up. Of course this does not apply to every Somali man. There are Somali men who respect women deeply and who understand that true strength is about uplifting one another. But the pattern I have observed tells me that what many present as superiority is really insecurity and envy. They are not above women at all. They are unsettled by the fact that women shine with a value that does not depend on external things.
