@philosophyminis: Harry is on his phone, and he's scrolling, scrolling, scrolling, and up pops a video of a cat eating a watermelon. He laughs. He double taps to like, and then he goes back to scrolling. Now up pops a video about a local politician who's been caught out lying. But he doesn't like politics. It's boring, and so he goes back to scrolling. Is Harry wrong because he's chosen to direct his attention away from something morally important? According to Sebastian Watzl, he is. And it's something that Ground News can help us with. Watzl argues that attention is not just the same as taste, but rather a moral act, because when you give your attention to one thing, you take it away from another. And the problem is, as Watzl puts it, that attention plays a large role in describing our behaviours and our beliefs. In other words, what you pay attention to will change how you think, and what you do. And this is why I like to use Ground News. Of course, Ground News doesn't force my attention, but it does allow me to see what is in my blind spot. It shuffles the stories and presents me with things I tend to ignore. It shows me things I don't, and things I should see. It reclaims the news from being an attention casino, and returns it to being a kind of moral steer. If you want to reclaim your attention and take the news seriously, there is a code in my bio to get a discount on the version of Ground News that I use, because how you devote your attention is not a morally neutral act. How and where you devote your attention matters.

Love your page, I get it’s a job too…and thus actually looks like a decent product. Then why do I feel such negative emotions when I witness capitalism taking place?

But what if harry knows that things like news are more misguiding to the public than a cat eating a watermelon therefore to save his own self from the potential deception he ignores the news altogether. Is he still wrong for assessing the situation in that way, not becuase he doesn't like politics but also becuase he knows politics runs on lies and propaganda. Is he still wrong for that?

Is this assuming that information is a hypodermic needle and Harry is passively consuming? Or that Harry has intentionally opened the scroll app to relax from all the seriousness and let loose by consuming cat videos 🤪 I guess it’s relative…

I think this is right. there is no morally neutral space in the world. We do everything intentionally

Omg, thank you! I did not know about Ground news, and hate having to do the manual "biased research" for every mildly interesting headline I come across. First time in my 5 years on this app I've actually used one of those "promo code in bio" links 👍

seems - S.W. Is suggesting there is a collective purpose - but whom- decides- what collective purpose an individual - should we allow to morally steer us- certainly not - media- tho

what is the algorithm GN uses to determine what should not be ignored? hoe does it avoid one-sidedness?

the fact is that when i hear about politics and social issues anger boils into me and i stimm so hard my heart beats to the point it scares me because I'm indignated and want everything to change. I choose not to follow politics for health

What is “should see” though? Why can’t I control my algorithm? Why am I “morally obligated” to see things outside of the scope of my mental or emotional bandwith? It’s presumptuous to peer into someone’s mind and tell them what they should or should not be “paying attention” to. We are not all the same.
