The Last Judgment is a #Christian belief that at the end of time, everyone who ever lived will be called before the second coming of #Christ to receive their just deserts. The sinners of the world will be punished and the holy will be rewarded. The Last Judgment has a range of scientific and philosophical problems, but according to Wittgenstein, this misses the point. Because, religious beliefs are different to everyday secular statements, and when non-religious people try to understand them, they often get it wrong. #Wittgenstein argued that we each belong to a ‘form of life,’ which is a kind of cultural pocket which defines how to use words and even how to think. For example, if I say, ‘My dad looks after me,’ then that sentence is defined by the where and when I said it; I've got a parent who helps me. Now suppose that I say, ‘ #God the Father looks after me.’ On the face of it, the sentence is the same. But for the #religious believer the meaning is very different. It takes form within a religious form of life and can only be understood from within it. A religious belief is not a scientific hypothesis. It is not a guess. It is not a metaphor. It is a religious belief. And so, Wittgenstein says something odd. If you were magically transported to the end of days to witness the Last Judgment and to prove it, then it would suddenly no longer be a religious belief. For Wittgenstein, a religious belief is different to everyday, normal beliefs, and they can only be understood or appreciated from within that religious form of life. #philosophy #language #belief
