Winter is the time to plant willow cuttings and whips. I love willow! It’s fast growing, creates a great screen, it’s attractive, and it can be used for so many crafty projects. It’s also incredibly easy to grow, because it roots so easily. Here’s how to take and/or plant willow cuttings: 🌱 The ideal time to take willow cuttings is after leaf fall and before leaf bud, so between December and March. 🌱 Cut your willow stems at the base, and then cut each stem into 20-30cm lengths, taking note of which way is up! (Tip: the buds on willow stems point upwards so if you get your cuttings muddled up just make sure you push them into the ground with the pointy ends of the buds facing up). 🌱 Push your cuttings into the ground to at least half their length. 🌱 Space your willow cuttings accordingly depending on purpose & variety. Our willow bed spacing is ~45cm in all directions, and we’ve planted them 4 deep to create a thick screen effect and windbreak. #willow #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
These adorable little apple trees are called stepover apples. At ~2ft high they really are tiny which makes them perfect even for the smallest of spaces. I think they make really pretty borders. They are planted around our rhubarb and gooseberry beds. They are also surprisingly productive. We get a lot of apples from these tiny little trees! Planting a stepover apple is pretty straightforward: 🌱 Make your supports. We bashed oak posts into the ground, drilled holes through them and threaded metal rods through the holes. 🌱 Plant your tree. Stepover apples are best grown using M27 rootstock. Most apples trees that you can buy are grafted, which means two parts of a tree are joined together. The rootstock controls the size of the tree, and the scion, the top part, controls the fruit you get. Make sure you plant at least 2 trees in the same group as trees in the same group will flower at the same time and therefore help to pollinate eachother. If you’re planting just one tree make sure you get a self-fertile variety. 🌱 Train your tree. Gently bend the top of the tree over towards the horizontal mental rod and tie it in. Alternatively, prune the tree back to a node close to the horizontal, and a new branch will grow from the node which can then be trained along the horizontal. #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
Lots of you have asked me about this so I thought I’d put together a little video! What’s better - ducks or chickens? 🌱🦆🐓💚 I’ve broken the question down into 3 parts: maintenance, personalities and egg production. 🌱 Maintenance - it’s very important to consider how much time you have available to care for your birds, and how willing you are to get your hands dirty with the cleaning! Also consider the space you’ll be putting them in and how that’s likely to change with the addition of ducks or chickens. 🌱 Personalities - both chickens and ducks have great personalities! I’ve mentioned in the video a few things I have noticed about the differences between them. It’s worth noting that we have Runner Ducks which are notoriously skittish, but I have read that all ducks should be raised from ducklings if you want them to be very friendly. 🌱 Egg production - both chickens and ducks are very good layers if you choose the right breed. Keep 3-4 ducks or chickens for a family of 4 and you’ll probably never need to buy eggs ever again! Both ducks and chickens will lay though the winter (albeit less frequently) providing you have the right breed, they are well cared for and receive enough daylight. Which do I prefer? I think I like them both equally! Do you prefer ducks or chickens? Let me know in the comments 🐓💚🦆🌱 #chickens #ducks #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign
