I really hate to tell you this, but I have used paratransit in three states now and it’s the same everywhere pretty much. California, where I have used four different paratransit are all the same. Oregon lift is also the same. New York paratransit is closely the same. Everyone is the same on having exact change or tickets, 24 hour advance notice, not being able to change a ride the day of, outdated payment, and everything else you mentioned. That’s just paratransit. The ideology is that we should be grateful just to have it.

I feel you on this! I’m in LA county. Same same same. Also, I have no way to get to Orange County since all my options end at the La/oc border for wheelchair transportation. 🤦♀️It’s so unnecessary frustrating and overwhelming. I’m sorry you’re dealing with similar issues too.

Yesss continue this conversation and lets also talk about how inaccessible their approval process is and how people get denied!! I can't drive due to my neurodevelopmental disability and I had to FIGHT to even get the appointment because my first application got rejected

except for the obstacle course and having access to a taxi type service, this is very similar to what I've encountered in Texas. Although The exact change thing is pretty common, there you could purchase passes. I was fortunate enough to have the funds to use Uber or pay someone most of the time their wait times were insane I met people going to work who had to leave 3-4 hours early in order to get there on time and the same for their ride home since it was a shared system and it went all over. those 3 days were some of the most frustrating days of trying to adjust to my new normal while still working

There are similar issues with the paratransit system that I have used in my area. Filling an application to become a Rider. Exact chsnge: it cost $3/trip. I have to call for a Reservation, but I had to call u days before my trip!
I, too, missed my bus once because they went to another entrance to the apartment complex I lived in!

I had a customer with a standing biweekly appointment from 10am to 11am. Pace (Chicago's para transit) told her the only time they could pick her up from home was 6am. and then would routinely show up in the middle of our appointment (30-60 minutes early) and demand she leave. then they would drive around for hours picking up and dropping off others before finally taking her home 🙄

And the thing about a lot of OC public services is that they don’t make changes unless they get called out online so KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING

I'm on OC and didn't know any of this!!! This is insane!! Not that it means much but I'll send off emails too! (Anyone in OC seeing this comment, you should too. You should have basic human empathy but if that isn't enough for you, remember that you may become disabled and need these service at ANY time)

We have a thing called connexions where they make you fill out an application with your doctor, and they have a thing called transportation disadvantage for people outside of Duval county IF AND ONLY IF your household income meets the requirement. Doesn’t matter how close you live to the county line. OH AND it’s $6 for 15 miles and then $2 per mile.

Unfortunately, that is how most Paratransit work I’ve been a part of three Paratransit in California. The only part that is extreme is an obstacle course, but I had a great experience with Paratransit and Fremont where they had Collab with Lyft, where you could get a discount for using Lyft you can also get coupons so you don’t need to get the exact change

That sounds very similar to my area! Although i didn’t have to do an obstacle course, we had to call or schedule through the app with the exact same 30 minute window! Luckily we have an app to track our rides but sometimes the app makes the drivers go to the wrong street and I had to walk to the driver! The latest for a next day pickup is 5pm! And they used to have a same day pickup service but cancelled that for Lyft vouchers!

I use LA Access and have used OC Access as a visitor, twice. They stranded me both times. Terrible. We also do the obstacle course in LA. Why are these services like this?! Ugh

I have no personal experience, but I have heard similar to "accessible" transportation both in Toronto, and Halifax Nova Scotia as well.
