@theprecolumbiangentleman: An incredible Maya codex plate that was found in the ancient Maya city of Tikal in Guatemala. This piece was made around 700 AD and originated in Calakmul or Nakbe but was gifted to one of the rulers at Tikal in antiquity. I photographed this example at the small museum on site. It’s is a stunning vessel and was painted by a master scribe. Codex ceramics are known for their elegant black fine line art over a cream background and red striping. This one has a light blue layer of stucco over the red outer rim, which must have had significance to the craftsman. A small hole was drilled in the center to release the spirit of the vessel prior to burial. #precolumbian #art #maya #mayan #ancient
