The white stuff looks like biofilm which is common with plants and driftwood. It should wipe away easily or you could add the clean up crew to take care of it.

I dont know how to explain this, but I could make a video. I took a new mans sock and cut the elastic off and the toe. Then I cut it from top-to-bottom so I had one rectangle. Dampen the sock with the tanks water (this helps start good bacteria on your sock). Then I draped the damp sock over the opening of the filter, so that one end was in the filter, and the other was touching the water. So essentially it looks like a sock waterfall lol. If it doesn't stay easily, I add a aquarium sponge, as itll help lessen the noise and keep the sock in place. I have sensory issues so every tank I have is rigged to not make noise. Also, having the tank as high as you can with water helps a ton too! If this makes no sense, I'll make a video :)
