#pov — [ p. 11 ] “after you.” jeo ong—the man you once loved, and the father your son never knew. avery's pov the day he came back from palawan, the office felt different. baka nga tama ako na anak n'ya 'yong naipa-background check n'ya sa akin. kaya pinaalam ko agad kay siko dahil may kakaiba talaga kay jeo ngayon. or maybe it was just me. but the moment he walked in, something in the air shifted—lighter, but distant. maaga pa lang, andito na ako sa desk ko. it’s always been like that, ever since nagsisimula pa lang si jeo sa company. ako ‘yung assistant na hindi lang taga-sunod ng utos. ako ang una n'yang nakilala bago pa man siya naging ceo. i was there when he was just jeremiah—driven, funny, impulsive, always running late sa mga meetings, and his dad was always scolding him about that. kapag na sa labas kami ng kumpanya, magkaibigan na lang kami, and i am close to his family. and today, he didn’t even look at me when he passed by. “morning, sir,” bati ko, trying to sound casual. he nodded, ngumiti lang s'ya, tapos diretso agad sa office. short, polite. nothing unusual, but still—it didn’t feel like him. ilang minuto lang, tinawag niya ako sa loob. i took a deep breath before entering. “yes, sir?” he was standing by the window, looking out at the city. the skyline looked cold behind him, parang hindi na siya ‘yung taong iniwan ko sa airport a few days ago. “how’s the schedule this week?” tanong niya, without looking at me. “we have a board meeting on thursday, then your call with the investors on friday. and uh…” i paused, forcing my tone to stay steady. “there’s the donation follow-up from st. clarisse in puerto princesa. gusto raw nilang magpasalamat personally. babawi raw po sila this time since last time, hindi sila handa dahil pumunta po kayo ng walang anunsyo.” that made him stop. “ahh,” maikling tugon n'ya. “yes, sir,” sagot ko. “you want me to handle the reply?” he shook his head. “no, i’ll take care of it.” may kakaibang lambot sa boses niya, ‘yung tipong hindi ko naririnig dati. i used to know every shift in his tone, every mood, every sigh. ngayon parang may ibang timpla—unreachable. nagkakape siya habang tinitingnan ang papers sa desk. tahimik lang akong nakatayo sa harap niya, waiting for his next instruction. “anything else?” tanong niya. “none so far, sir,” sagot ko, pero hindi ako makagalaw. gusto ko sanang sabihin na ang tagal niyang nawala, na tahimik ang buong office nang wala siya, na nami-miss kong marinig ‘yung boses niyang laging nagmamadali sa phone. pero ano bang karapatan ko? he looked up, parang napansin niyang matagal akong nakatayo. “you okay, avery?” napilitan akong ngumiti. “of course, sir. just… making sure everything’s settled.” umupo ako sa harap ng desk niya, pretending to check my tablet. pero sa totoo lang, tinitingnan ko lang siya. the way his eyes soften when he reads, the way his jaw tightens when he’s thinking. the way his hands—those same hands that used to fix every broken part of this company—now seem gentler. parang may iniisip siya. someone, maybe. “did something happen in palawan?” i finally asked. he looked up again, brow raised. “why?” “you just seem…” i paused, searching for the word. “different.” “different?” “yeah,” i said, half-smiling. “more quiet. less... driven, maybe?” he laughed softly, but it wasn’t the same sound i knew. “i just realized some things,” he said. napakurap ako. “like what?” “that i’ve been too focused on things that don’t really matter.” hindi ko alam kung anong ibig niyang sabihin, pero alam kong may laman ‘yung mga salitang ‘yon. noon, laging ako ‘yung sandalan niya sa lahat—mga deadlines, board meetings, even sa mga gabi na hindi na siya makatulog dahil sa pressure. i was there. and i thought… maybe someday, he’d see me, too. but now, he’s looking somewhere else. maybe thinking of someone else.
