Dyeing with Flowers 🌼 YARROW ✨ Yarrow is a sweet small flower that is drought tolerant, pollinator friendly, edible, and creates beautiful natural dye colors. It comes in white, yellow, light pink, and dark pink. Fun little fact about Yarrow - in Greek Mythology it is believed that Achilles’ mother bathed him in yarrow water to apply its protective powers to make him invincible wherever the herbal bath had penetrated his skin, but missed his heal. Today I am using the yellow variety that I found growing down the street from my house. After foraging responsibly- I brought it home to upcycle a cotton onesie to make a gift for my friend who is expecting a baby girl this summer. I pretreat all my my plant based fibers using an alum acetate mordant to achieve the most vibrant hue that stays even after wash and wear. Pretreating fabric, or mordanting the fabric, is the secret to having results that are bright and bold- this is always the first step of the dye process prior to working with your natural dye that prepares the fabric to be able to absorb the dye and become colorfast (helps the color stick to the fibers). Once you are ready to dye your goods, it’s time to prepare your dye bath. Bring water to a boil and add the yarrow flowers. Reduce to a low simmer and allow to the color to develop over an hour. Turn off heat and strain about the flowers. At this point you can transfer your dye into a bucket or leave in the pot depending on how large your goods are. Then add in your goods and keep in the dye bath until you achieve the depth of color you like. Then transfer into a cool water bath and rinse. Hang to dry in the sunshine and enjoy the bright yellow color that yarrow creates! #botanicaldye #botanicaldyeing #reducereuserecycle #flowerpower #onionskinsdye #upcycleclothing #magicofmotherhood #ecodyeing #naturaldyes
