@getbookhelp: Stay safe out there, writers! 3 red flags: 🚩 1. Someone emails / texts / calls / DMs you out of the blue (similar to how you get spam calls on your phone). If you contact someone first and they simply reply to your query, fair enough. But the vast majority of stories about writers getting scammed begin with a random DM, email, or other unsolicited contact. This is often the only red flag newbies need to pay attention to in order to stay out of harm's way. 🚩 2. They flatter your manuscript, even though they've never read it. As any seasoned editor will tell you, you can't assess a manuscript without reading it. Even getting a chunk of it as a sample can help a little bit. But if all you've ever shared are snippets of your work, your musings, or funny memes, someone gushing about your manuscript makes no sense. Additionally, if you're still writing your first or second draft, chances are that it's going to be the worst possible version of your piece. Don't let someone gas you up just to get money out of you. 🚩 3. The account / website they reach out to you from is brand new. On social media, this will often be a profile with a generic picture instead of a company logo and the account follows loads of people but barely anyone is following them. Conversely, they have a massive amount of "followers," even though their account is only a couple of weeks / months old. If it seems like they "sprung up overnight," that's probably because they did—a key characteristic of scammers is the ease with which they disappear after getting cash from their victims. Then they pop up with a new "company" and start the scam process all over again. If you steer clear of people and companies that show these red flags, you can keep yourself safe from getting scammed out of your hard-earned money. #AmWriting #AuthorLife #publishingtips
