This is such a wonderful way of explaining it!! Also consider accents — we understand what foreign people say when they don’t pronounce words the way a native speaker would, yet we communicate with each other just fine. And the fact that they went out of their way to learn new words/phrases (if not an entire language) is so remarkable that the pronunciation itself no longer matters because it’s the effort and commitment to communication that counts

Being a dad when my son first word came out Dah I knew exactly what he was saying and so did he and I was elated. He called me daddoh for a long time. I didn’t require him to call me father or dad. I allowed him to develop and connect with me on his terms and loved every minute of it.
