The Adal Sultanate was one of the most powerful Somali Muslim states in the Horn of Africa. Based in Zeila and later Harar, it rose after the decline of Ifat and became a major force in regional trade and warfare. Its greatest era came in the 16th century under the legendary Imam Ahmed ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi — known as Ahmed Gurey. In 1529, Ahmed Gurey launched a massive jihad against the Christian Ethiopian Empire. With the support of Ottoman-supplied firearms, Somali cavalry, and allied Muslim forces from across the Horn, Adal’s armies crushed the vastly larger Abyssinian forces in battles like Shimbra Kure. Battle after battle, Adal triumphed despite being heavily outnumbered. By the early 1530s, most of Ethiopia was under Adal’s control. Imperial cities fell, monasteries were destroyed, and much of the highlands embraced Islam. The Christian empire was on the verge of total collapse, and for the first time in history, Ethiopia nearly became a Muslim state. Ahmed Gurey’s victories sent shockwaves across the region, proving the military brilliance and determination of the Adal Sultanate. Only when Portugal intervened in 1541 — sending musketeers and cannons to save Ethiopia — did the tide turn. At the Battle of Wayna Daga (Wofla) in 1543, Imam Ahmed was killed, ending Adal’s dream of fully conquering Ethiopia. But even then, Adal had permanently changed the Horn of Africa. Islam had spread deeper into Abyssinia, firearms had entered African warfare, and Somali power had proven unmatched. ||#fyp #somali #History #adalsultanate #zeila
