people saying “well it’s just an adaptation”… im so so exhausted😭 Heathcliff is, as you said, the racialized other (which yknow, Bertha in jane eyre, all vampires, any of the indigenous characters in Heart of Darkness and Dr Moreau), and it’s so so integral to his character like you do not have Heathcliff if you do not have a dark skinned Romani man who has unfortunately endured so many abuses by his white adoptive family and society😭😭LIKE WHAT ARE WE DOING

Frankenstein: the monster is the victim and the human is the monster. Wuthering Heights: cycles of abuse can make us both victims and abusers. Like, this is the most basic interpretation of both and no one is getting it. Media literacy is truly dead.

I think what we’re currently facing isn’t just the fact that there is rife illiteracy within the general public, but that the so called “cultural commentators” who are meant to interpret & enrich the way audiences experience art — well those arbiters of taste are media illiterate too😭culture. Being cultured. Not just well read but having the ability to comprehend work as it was intended? A dying art.

In the defense of the film critic, it was clear in context of the whole piece that it was about how the audience would react to a more faithful adaptation and not the usual Hollywood! Thought it was a bad review but I feel bad cos the excerpt was really taken out of context lol

I have nothing against Jacob Elordi because I fear his WH casting was a push from his team to capitalize on his Euphoria popularity, but casting him as Heathcliff when an incredible actor of color (who already played two literary icons!) who should’ve been playing him is instead cast as Linton just proves to me how inept Fennell is as a filmmaker.
