My sister and I decided to go shopping together to shop for little things for our new apartments in Philly. Before we even started scanning our belongings at this self checkout only store, I watched the worker whisper to his co worker behind his vest to watch us. He nodded his head in our direction and they both looked at, so I already knew what was happening. However, I didn't let that bother me because we're not stealing so I'm just going to continue to do me. When we were finished our transactions and walking towards the exit doors, we were stopped and he asked to see my sister's receipt. He said that she didn't scan a big $16.00 bin because it didn't show up on the receipt. He also said we didn't pay for the paper towels but there were 2 transactions so that was on my receipt. Once he saw my receipt he disregarded that and kept telling my sister she didn't pay for the bin. She pulled up her Target app as it shows your purchased items, and a picture of each item. After this proof, he still didn't believe her. His solution was for her to get back in line to pay for it but why would my sister pay for something twice if she already paid?!?! So she asked if there is a security guard that has access to the security cameras so they can literally see that she scanned the item. This ended up being a police officer from the Philadelphia Police Department. When he asked my sister if she paid with her debit card I simply responded yes for her and he immediately put his finger up to my mouth signaling me to be quiet and stop talking. I wish I recorded the entire encounter but after this poor treatment, I began recording because I realized what was happening to us. The video shows the rest of the scene. I went from extreme anxiety & my heart beating fast to anger, and then sadness. I don't regret crying because I stuck up for my sister & I and didn't just accept it. Although, I am a sensitive person and this is triggering for me, I don't care if anyone takes my tears for weakness. I am genuinely tired of racial oppression, discrimination, & inequalities. It is not fair. The manger claims that he will address how they handled the situation but we all know that he will not. He just gave me free bags and watched me bag my stuff. I hate how privileged people get to treat marginalized communities as if we aren't human beings like them. We are just 2 Black Girls shopping in Target, why can't we just purely exist in this world without being harassed because our skin is dark. This world saddens me deeply, my emotions are everywhere & I am disgusted/frustrated. I will never give up when it comes to fighting for the Black community, Target do better... & ya'll better do something!!! #racism #discrimination #equality #blacklivesmatter #racismawareness #racismneedstostop #raciallymotivated #racialdiscrimination #accusedoftheft #oppression #awareness #racialprofiling #philly #philadelphiapolice #phillytiktok #target #barbieyaya @target @
