It’s a big weekend for many with the London Marathon tomorrow where my lovely friend Diane Treadwell is running with all our patients and family members from the Mouth Cancer Foundation Support Group in her heart. Lots of training has taken place, fundraising and raising awareness for head and neck cancers. Thank you Diane 🤗and good luck tomorrow lovely 💙 What many people won’t realise about head and neck cancers is that they isolate not only the patients but their family members. This is where support is very important. As a charity the @MouthCancerFoundation offers various types of support with the private and safe group on Facebook that I man and the weekly Zoom support meeting that I co-host with the lovely Jocelyn Harding Dental Hygienist for 2 hours every Monday throughout the year from 7-9pm. I also occasionally do Facebook video chats with members who need support as an emergency if I’m able. Very recently I needed to signpost a patient to @Maggie’s Centres for some virtual sessions and we both received a response within days which totally impressed me. I had a meeting yesterday with a cancer support specialist who listened to what our patients needed and was happy for me to signpost. They offer a virtual service which would normally be a phone call, but I explained that many of our patients are speech impaired and having a zoom meeting for support on a 1-1 basis where they can use a chat box function to help be understood, she said that would be fine to do and they are happy to offer this. She was from Maggie's Highlands and they offer a unique online support platform. I explained that many of our patients struggle with being isolated due to facial scarring, speech issues, low self-esteem and low self-confidence at times; mental health can be a big issue for some of our patients. Some are unable to travel very far if they have mobility issues or completely reliant on feeding tubes. She very kindly gave me their programme of virtual events for signposting. There’s also the Macmillan Cancer Support who many of our patients also recommend for their services. Support is crucial after any cancer but so needed after a head and neck diagnosis. Don’t forget that a diagnosis in this area will impact your EATING, DRINKING, SWALLOWING, TALKING, BREATHING and INTIMACY… With this in mind make today your self-check day and if something doesn’t feel or look right please seek advice through your dentist or GP and mention your concerns. You don’t want to go through this medical pathway and you certainly don’t want your whole life impacted for the rest of your life afterwards… #headandneckcancer #support #LondonMarathon #mentalhealthsupport #LateEffects
