Battle of Varolampi Pond ("Sausage War") On the night of December 10, 1939, during the Winter War, the Soviet 718th Rifle Regiment launched a surprise attack against the lightly defended Finnish rear positions near Varolampi Pond, northwest of Tolvajärvi. 🌲 As the Soviets advanced, they came across a field kitchen where a pot of Finnish sausage soup was simmering. 🌭 Temporarily overcome by hunger and exhaustion, the Soviet troops paused their attack to eat. 🍲 This pause gave Major Aaro Pajari enough time to muster a desperate, improvised counterattack force — made up of cooks, clerks, supply men, and artillery NCOs. 🪖 The Finns struck swiftly, engaging in brutal close-quarters combat — including rare bayonet fighting. ⚔️ By dawn of December 11, the Soviets had been driven back, suffering over 100 casualties, while the Finns lost around 20 men. ❄️ The event became known in history as the "Sausage War" — a darkly ironic nickname for a moment when hunger altered the course of battle. 🧭🥶 #historytok #historyfacts #militaryhistory #sausagewar #truestory #education
