On November 4, around 6 AM, I woke up to my father shouting that the water was rising fast. Within minutes, our house was already flooded, when we tried to open the door, it wouldn’t budge anymore. I jumped out of the window to save our two dogs from the back of the house, then went back inside through the same window. I tried to rescue our birds on the other side, but the current was too strong and the water was rising too fast. It broke my heart that I couldn’t save them. We rushed to the second floor, but the water didn’t stop there. It kept rising until we had to climb onto the roof. I was only able to save my passport. At that point, we thought we were going to die, the current was strong, and the water wouldn’t stop rising. We live near the fire station and police station, but no one came to rescue us. One man in a military uniform climbed onto nearby roofs, but he said they couldn’t help because they had no equipment. So we waited, praying the water would stop. We told each other I love you, thinking it might be our last chance. My sister wasn’t with us, so I filmed a video, just in case it would be the last thing she’d ever see of us. Then, God answered our prayers. The water finally stopped rising and slowly began to go down. We waited until it was safe to return to the second floor. Still, no rescuers came. When the flood subsided to waist level, we finally saw rescuers with boats, but there weren’t enough of them. That day, I realized that sometimes, during the darkest moments, we can only rely on ourselves. This is the reality of corruption and flood control anomalies in the Philippines, where ordinary people die, and the corrupt live lavishly. #bangoncebu #floodcontrolproject #liloan #bagyongtino #ghostproject
