@joegetsabout: I love Boston! But it’s public transport is sometimes great, sometimes bad and often completely strange 😂 It’s home to the oldest subway in America (older than New York! Ha!). It’s also got a weird (or pointless if I were being less charitable) bus rapid transit system - which feels like a compromise to keep costs down during the costly and controversial Big Dig project(s) #boston #massachusetts #subway #trams #busrapidtransit
I live in Boston now but grew up in a part of America with 0 public transport so though it’s a very imperfect system i’m still grateful we have one at all

The silver line was planned to be similar to the green line or light rail but when the big dig went over budget they decided to make it 60ft buses instead

Are the buses electric by chance?

The Big Dig is interesting because some see burying the freeways as an urbanist victory but it also blocks future underground transit and crucially any possible connection between the two Amtrak stations.

But after the Silver Line they extended the Green Line! It was amazing! It took them so long!

I’m from Boston, and the trains and busses are awful because there are always delays. My previous job I had no choice but to take the train because the company I worked for had a 12 yr wait list for a parking spot. At my new job, I pay for off site parking that’s a mile away, but it’s better than taking public transportation.

The Silver Line( the bus ) should have its own tunnel to Logan Airport. It would make it the only way to get to Logan from the south and west

The underground trams feel like a blast from the 60’s. (Or earlier). From a style point of view the best UK comparison is the old Blackpool Trams. Or is it just the colour scheme.

I think the silver line is a good example of not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. It was a realistic project in the political situation it was built in. If we’d held out for rail, likely nothing would have been built.

Honestly the fact that the Green Line extension actially happened feels so surreal to me, so points to the MBTA for that

boston needs rapid transit that goes through cambridge/somerville - highway railway subway whatever that is. goong from newton to medford should NOT go through big dig and worsen the traffic. this is difficult to implement since none of these areas are technically boston but only boston is paying the price
