We are not getting smarter. They have studies on this. IQ is going down for the first time in over 100 years.

SCHOOLS DO NOT READ WHOLE BOOKS. They read passages from text and don’t finish the book because of test taking culture.

I teach high school English. My seniors are reading Red Rising and loving it. All 22 of them. One finished it three weeks early and is on book 2. Another is almost done with it two weeks early. We need to encourage long form literacy and use the right novels to do it. We can’t give up on reading fiction because it benefits society.

We won't advance if we continue making laws based on outdated mythical stories that have absolutely no room for any advancement, while keeping half of the population (women and girls) indebted from just being born female.

take one look at this guy he's never read "long-form" literature or scholarly works of any kind, ever: guaranteed. how he was chosen to comment on a topic so far beyond his exclusive area of expertise (degeneracy via abuse of alcohol, people, animals, video game addiction, gambling etc)? must be an amusing or at least clarifying backstory there

humans used orality and oral tradition for millennia before printing so I don’t see the issue

Textuality is not finished. People created it for a purpose. Our brains crave it. The same people who loved reading aren’t being fed by short form video content. They might consume it, but they also read long essays and, yes, books.

This makes me so sad. I love books and the experience it provides. The holding the book, flipping the pages, the scent a new book has...all of it. Sadly, I sense that slowly we will move away from books to the digital ebooks and podcasts only.

This seems very counter to the recent resurgence in reading for enjoyment (and aesthetics). Also, reading is a form of thinking. Watching is a form of thinking. Listening is a form of thinking. Writing is a form of thinking. Each must work in tandem if they can.
