you and knitting cult lady are the only people on this app I've heard talking about the kids who grow up in AA. I never realized that if you say you grew up "in" something and it's not locational data it might be a cult.

The whole “anything you put in front of your recovery you will lose” thing is pretty dark when you think about people’s kids

Not born into it but certainly raised in it. Went to meetings until like 11 bc my mom couldn’t afford a babysitter. Im convinced part of the reason i “became an alcoholic” was partly caused by the hours i spent in the rooms at a young impressionable age.

Not to mention that these kids are hearing things that are not age appropriate.

Facts. Thank you for the validation. It’s incredibly frustrating to be ‘sacrificed for the mission’ your whole life and to then be shamed for sharing what happened to us.

When I first got sober at 19 and there was a girl who had like 12 years sober and was late 20s. She had drank like 6 times. Both her parents were in aa. She talked A LOT about the “spiritual malady”

Hi thank you for sharing … began attending meetings at 9 by the time was 15 i was attending meeting claiming me to be an addict … I’m not though co-dependent re my mom told me I was an addict before I ever had tried any substance ..I’m actually autistic but it was said it was “addict behavior”

My ex husband we to AA and I used to go w him and I was shocked to realize it was religious, I had no idea. It's like they wait for ppl to be at their lowest to try to indoctrinate them and it felt so icky to me. There needs to be more support groups to getting sober that aren't like this.

I brought my kids, single mom, hustling to get better for them. Open meeting Woman told me I needed to take my kids and leave. She laid into me. Imagine if I had actually left in that state of mind, not knowing if anything else was out there

ive been trying to get my mom's trauma dumping wrangled in but shes over 30 years into aa and that's just what they do there. so getting her to think about talking to a real therapist instead of just staying in this cycle is hard. as her kid who grew up surrounded by aa being born into it for sure put me at a disadvantage

I was raised in the rooms of AA and ended up with my own addictions issues. I also raised by babies in NA for a long time and they had no boundaries with hugging people because NA in my area huggs everyone upon entry 😳. it caused my kids alot of trauma from hearing the traumatic stories of other addicts. I have since left the 12 step fellowship and I am healing my family from that mess.

I'm actually curious about your opinion on how AA is portrayed in Shameless (US). if you'd be willing to make a video on it. what it gets right, what it gets wrong etc.

Grew up in NA, my dad was a “founding father” of NA in the area I grew up. I have many feelings about program.

I grew up going to AA meetings with my mom and dad. I don’t know why my mom went with my dad when she was in an alcoholic now that I know more about a I realize how strange that was but they had a whole playroom for kids to go into during the meetings at our local AA clubhouse and I went for years and as no surprise, I ended up becoming an addict and was in 12 step meetings for 4 1/2 years before I broke away. I celebrate nine years of sobriety today.
