it's hard to see the privilege when you have problems in your life like depression and trauma and all the privilege you have doesn't help in any way, I think most people see problems in their lives better than they can see what they were privileged with

I’ve seen this most clearly in my trans male friends who’ve observed how society treats them differently after they’ve transitioned. Without doing a thing differently in the world, they are recipients of this dividend simply because the world sees them as men.

Men don’t get privileges just for being men, only the billionaires etc get large inheritances, middle class people might get their college paid for and a starter home but poor men get absolutely nothing and let’s not even get into different races and abilities. A charismatic athlete or musician is treated very differently than a poor physicist or an unfortunate homeless veteran.

It’s the water I swim in and I often don’t see myself accessing those dividens. To be honest they are nice and my lesser self would love to turn a blind eye or pretend they are somehow earned. Self examination is work but An egalitarian society is what I want for my daughter.

I think for men to divest from their patriarchal dividend, they have to be willing to sacrifice, and I think a lot of men recognize the problem. But they're not willing to sacrifice. They're still willing to let women do that.
