One of the many things you learn as you grow up is that there is more going on behind what people are saying. Of course, there are outright lies, but there's also a range of other #psychological phenomena. For example, #deflection is where we shift attention away from our own feelings, or #projection is where we claim somebody else is feeling what we actually are. #Emotions are complicated. James #Baldwin once wrote that 'I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hate so stubbornly is because they sense once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.' Baldwin's point is that we shouldn't take hate on face value, but see it as a mask people wear. It's a defence mechanism to avoid facing fear and grief. The philosopher Martin #Nussbaum explored this more in her work on emotions. Nussbaum argued that emotions are not irrational. They are often self-protective, cognitive responses to things that we care about. When somebody lashes out in anger, there is often profound loss underneath their words. Somebody who shows such easy hate is often shielding themselves from vulnerability, rejection, or despair. Hate, then, is a strategy. It's what some psychologists call a secondary emotion, the thing that shows up when the real feeling is just too heavy to hold. The problem, though, is that if we carry on wearing this armour, we will never heal. If you are always swinging, you will never mend. Courage does not mean clinging on to your hate. Courage is when somebody sits down with their hurt. They name it and they feed it. Only then will it begin to fade. #philosophy #psychology
