Coma distortion is a big problem when it comes to night photography, and most people don't even realize it. This type of distortion creates trailing-like stars that can be nearly impossible to fix. Generally speaking, most lenses experience worse coma distortion when shooting wide open. For that reason, I'd generally choose to stop the lens down one stop (use f/4 rather than f/2.8) for better image quality. Even better if you have a lens with a lower maximum aperture, such as f/1.4, since then you can shoot at f/2.0. Yes, you will lose a stop of light, meaning you'll have an image that has slightly more noise (unless you're using a star tracker), but it's much easier to fix noise in the image than coma distortion. Hopefully, this will help you take better night photos!
