You’re spot on. I think Drake might have painted himself into an artistic corner or at least placed a lot of limitations on himself. It doesn’t look like he will ever be allowed to “grow-up” & stretch himself/experiment as an artist, even if he wants to. Part of this is his really restrictive contract (I was kind of shocked at the details once they came out) & how tied he is to the UMG machine. I think the strategy he’s been using to stay relevant in the music industry post 2013 has hurt him in the long run. It doesn’t help that Drake never stopped being a “fan” of hip hop, even when he should have finally seen himself as a colleague. He could have been treated differently if he had moved different. In some ways he’s still that kid that bought a microphone autographed by Pusha T because he loved the Clipse. Getting men you work with & are friends with tattooed on your body doesn’t make them want to see you as an equal. Buying Pharrell’s chains & then making a song taunting him about it is weird behavior. Pharrell is not going to want to work with him. That’s not even how “snatching chains” works. I can even kind of understand how Drake’s love of hip hop would coincide with his label’s desire to market hip hop to young white men, but if that’s the route you take, you get kind of stuck. The kids grow up & you have to appeal to the same demographic over & over as the years go by. Instead of being able to grow older with his audience, Drake has been trying to hit the same demographic with younger/hotter artists doing features. Now that isn’t really working anymore, he’s got nowhere to go. The kids watching him on streams don’t want this new stuff, & he’s aging out of appealing to them. How much music has Drake dropped in the last 18 months? A lot. How much of it has hit?

And may I add a perspective, you said Drake is an artist, I submit that Derrick is an act a successful musical act. Who went up against an artist and was shown the difference now he’s trying to act like an artist and his showing that he can’t.

dont say that drake shudnt have battled kendrick...at that level,turning away wud have made him look like a btcch.da only reason ppl dont hold dat against cole is becuz it wasnt a battle of the big 3 it was 1v1 the hitmaker v the reincarnated king of rap. wat drake shudnt have done was slander those descent ppl in kendricks circle

I have heard some of the reactors to Ep3 stream say that they didn’t mind it so much if it was something new. They would forgive experimental/cryptic visuals if it wasn’t still all about Kendrick & the lawsuit. They said they could forgive lame if it was new but just not for them. What they really didn’t like was that in their opinion too much of the visuals were still dragging the beef, Drake feeling betrayed, & that UMG is bad. The song that went with the visuals for Ep3 was filled with references to the names of Kendrick’s songs & lyrics. They wanted him to move on. I think they would have been more forgiving of the experimental nature of the visuals if he had moved on. The other thing that baffles me is he is working with good people. The art director & cinematographer have great resumes. He has to be fighting the creative people he hires, because they produce good work for other people.
