The Hijra is so significant that the Islamic calendar (Hijri calendar) begins with this event. Upon arriving in Madinah, then known as Yathrib, Prophet Muhammad established the first Islamic community. Madinah became the political and spiritual capital of the early Islamic state. The Prophet lived in Madinah for ten years until his death in 632 CE.
