You do what you need to for your own piece of mind. Adult protective services will contact his family to see about getting him care. And if they refuse the state will step in and help. I went through this with my grandma. Poke me if you need to talk.

i agree with your pattern recognition, i would personally not trust the other side of the family to step in, when they haven't already done so currently. if they were concerned, they would have done something unless they are just burying their heads in the sand?

if you do call it in they should do a test to see if he is there mentally. if he is not they will likely remove him from the situation and get him help whether he likes it or not.

I would call in, bare minimum for the animals, and if there’s mouse poop, roaches, mold all that stuff, that’s an unhealthy environment to be in 24/7 for him and the animals. That way you don’t have any guilt and you did what you could.

do what your gut tells you. yea you may loose the relationship with them. but also its at a point where its animal cruelty as well as them putting themselves in danger

Also, do it for your own piece of mind. You care about this guy, you care about the animals, at least you'll know that you tried.
