@johnefinance: If you want to retire early - don’t max out your 401k because your money will be locked up until you’re 59 1/2. Here’s what I’d recommend instead

Why do we have to max out our Roth IRA if you’re already putting money in a brokerage?

If we want liquid funds to park somewhere, why wouldn’t we use a high yield savings account vs a brokerage account? - Someone not well versed in retirement funds. 😅

This is valid, but very questionable. Most people lack the income and discipline to execute this strategy. Also, you’re overlooking tax savings and if you have the income to execute this you should also be able to max out the 401k too.

What about all the gains you get from the pre tax earnings that you can invest in a 401k vs after tax in a traditional account?

You can access 401k(s) penalty free before 59.5 using the 72(t) rule or a Roth conversion ladder. You should absolutely maximize your 401k contributions for the tax benefits.

You can max out your 401k, allowing for higher contributions than Roth. Retire, convert your 401k to a Roth and then take your contributions without a 10% penalty.

I agree. However another benefit to the 401k is reducing taxable income. this can be beneficial in some case and can actually lead to a large return to then be invested else where (Roth IRA, HSA, etc.). It is all on a case by case basis
