A lot of people tend to misunderstand high-functioning autistics, especially since we aren't considered profoundly autistic. Think of autism like an iceberg—what's visible above the water (observable skills) is just the tip. Below the surface, there are many hidden challenges that are not immediately apparent but can significantly impact an individual's ability to function. For instance, I might seem fine in a quiet, structured environment, but in a noisy, unpredictable setting, I can become overwhelmed and struggle to function. This isn't because I'm not trying; it's because my brain processes information differently. Just as the majority of an iceberg is hidden beneath the water's surface, the majority of my challenges are hidden beneath the surface of my observable skills. These hidden challenges can include sensory sensitivities, social difficulties, and executive functioning issues that significantly impact my daily life. Some people assume that because I'm high-functioning, I don't need support or accommodations. However, this couldn't be further from the truth. Just like anyone else, I have unique needs and challenges that require understanding and support. To help me function at my best, I need certain accommodations, such as a quiet workspace, extra time for tasks, and understanding from others. These accommodations can make a huge difference in my ability to succeed and thrive. I encourage everyone to approach high-functioning autism with an open mind and a willingness to learn. By understanding the hidden challenges of autism, we can create a more supportive and inclusive environment for everyone. Just because I'm high-functioning doesn't mean I'm able to perform for you because I'm able to mask my autism to seem functional to you. Let's work together to create a world where everyone, regardless of their neurodevelopmental differences, can thrive.
