History of cooperation between Ukraine and France on the development of a promising tank in the 1990s. From the book DE LA GUERRE FROIDE AUX CONFLITS DE DEMAIN CHAR LECLERC (Marc Chassillan, one of the developers of Leclerc and director of export promotion of the project). Quote: It all started in November 1992 in Ukraine during a trip during which the author of these lines and the president of GICAT, Eric Blass, visited the defense industry enterprises of the newly independent country. A visit to the Malyshev Plant in Kharkov established a connection between Giat Industries and the Ukrainian tank industry, as both sides quickly realized the benefits of rapprochement. However, cooperation did not begin immediately due to many technical and industrial obstacles. Nevertheless, Ukraine did not remain idle in the field of tank building and sold 320 T-80UD tanks to Pakistan. A few years later, negotiations resumed and the parties decided to move forward. At the first stage, Giat Industries and the Malyshev Design Bureau Morozov focused on the project to upgrade the T-80 turret to NATO standards. This involved attempting to integrate two key components of the Leclerc tank: the 120mm F1 gun and the 22-round automatic loader (AL). To achieve this, the rear of the T-80 turret had to be opened up to weld in the AL compartment, and the gun mantlet had to be specially machined to accommodate the French gun. SAGEM (now SAFRAN), which had been active in Ukraine since 1992, proposed installing the Savan-15 sight. However, the project was not optimal due to the geometric limitations of the T-80 turret. As a result, it was decided to develop a new two-man turret built around the 120mm gun and AL combination. However, lack of funding put an end to the project and the cooperation. Figure 1. Combining the T-84 chassis with Leclerc turret technology would have created an excellent medium tank for the export market with an excellent price-quality ratio. Illustration 2. Model of a Franco-Ukrainian medium tank project combining the T-80 chassis, produced at the Malyshev Plant in Kharkov, and the T21 turret. #concepts #vehcile #tank #mbt #sovietunion #ukraine #kmdbustazdary #kmdb #france #leclerc #modified #project #t #84 #t84 #military #v #viral #viralvideo #viraltiktok #video
