I’m attempting to be the first person ever to swim across Lake Powell. Here’s how I’m preparing for this massive journey- I will be swimming from Hite Crossing Bridge in Utah to Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona. This means that I will need to swim 140 miles in just 10 days. Ambitious, I know. This journey will be completely unassisted-.My safety crew will not be offering me food, navigation, or pacing. To carry my gear, I’ve designed a floating rig from an inflatable paddle board with solar power, water filtration, and dry boxes for food storage, gear, and human waste (yes, I will be leaving NO trace). How does a person train for this kind of endeavor? After 18 years out of the water, I started training 5 months ago on a VersaClimber. I developed a protocol to buildbuild swim-specific posture, mobility and endurance in daily 20 minute sessions. This sounds absolutely crazy, but it works. This dream has been 20 years in the making and VersaClimber has made it possible - there is no way I could have taken the time out of my schedule to achieve this in any other way. Standing on the floor while climbing upperbody-only for 5 months has totally transformed my body for swimming and allowed my training to be 3x as effective. I will share more about my findings in another post, so keep an eye out if you’re interested in leaning more. The main challenges aside from the physical feat will be getting enough calories/nutrition while swimming and maintaining my mental toughness. I will be burning 8,000 calories a day, so will need to consume 80,000 over 10 days. This means that I will be packing as much calorie-dense food as possible. Plenty of peanut butter, dehydrated food, and protein powder. Training for this kind of journey is not just physical. It will be just as challenging mentally. I will be face down in murky water for 10 days relying on past adventures and suffering to carry me through. Our desire for safety takes away some of the most incredible experiences in life. It is when we are uncomfortable that we become alive. I will be posting updates on this page, so follow along if you want to see an almost 50 year old man swim across Lake Powell.
