Best way to explain this situation from a Bank advisors POV if you don’t understand. Cheques are considered a “promise to pay” and not “guaranteed funds” like bank drafts in Canada / teller cheques in the US. Usually with bank accounts, the bank will allow a certain amount to be released to you from a cheque that is deposited assuming you don’t have bad banking behaviours like not paying loans back or bounced cheques. But Chase bank machine sometimes will release the entire cheque before the bank can verify and collect the funds to deposit into your account. So when people realized this, they took advantage of it and called it the “Chase free money glitch”. But essentially they took out the bank money thinking they gamed the system. Once the bank was able to verify the cheques were bad, they took back the money the bank machine released to which ended “overdrawing” their account into the negatives. In this situation, any money that get deposited into that account will go to pay back the money the machine released to you “in good faith”. Cheque hold are in place to protect people from this situation.
