American in Japan since 1997: Here's what Americans need to realize. No one died, no homes were destroyed much less floated away, no one became homeless. We have about twenty-five typhoons a year, and are very well prepared for flooding. Train service may be interrupted for a few hours, power lost for maybe a day, but Japan is well prepared for the inevitable and obvious, whereas the US this would be an emergency, a disaster, you would be having legal battles with the insurers for years to come. In Japan, this is just a mess that gets cleaned up in at most a few days, then everything is back to normal. Longest train interruption I can remember, maybe eight hours.
