So different from "A Girl Worth Fighting For", where the women are idealized and theoretical (or disguised, in Mulan's case)

it's also interesting that we later get an entire song sung by young men about what they actually want in "a girl worth fighting for" and it's not the same things the old women sing about

and later when we finally meet Li Shang, we finally learn what REAL young men want: ✨ BRATTY FEMBOYS ✨

It’s also cool to hear later what the men actually want. Some of it lines up, but not a lot

She doesn’t learn “what men actually want” until the last song of the movie “a girl worth fighting for”

When writers say “show don’t tell” this is what they mean. All of the fighting age men have left for war.

As a child I thought those stylists set her up since they said a tiny waist was important. But the matchmaker called her too skinny😭

to me it's a great parallell to "a girl worth fighting for". that song is the same but the opposite. the whole narrative about fictional women and how they can serve men, while this one is how women think they can serve. what's interesting about it is that both sides only recite what's expected of them to believe, but non of them are actually communicating what the other side wants. in many ways the movie is about how Mulan stumbles upon the rituals her society gives to each gender and then challanges that by actually communicating the nuances. she becomes a bridge between the social performance and the nuanced reality of people. the men don't fit the perfect mal description they sing about, the women don't fit the perfect description they sing about ether

And! The info the other women are feeding her is not even true! When Mulan is in the army pretending to be a man and they sing the song about what they want in a woman she doesn’t know what to say so she repeats the information the other women gave her and they don’t particularly like it.

🍪 I love the idea that Mulan just never interacted with men her age until the camp (which adds to the hilarity of her trying to pretend to be a man, but she has nothing concrete to work with)

girl, you could have made this point in like 30 seconds. can we just normalize not repeating the same idea over and over again just to have longer content to monetize?

OK, hear me out. On this same sort of note, through A Girl Worth Fighting For, when all those guys are talking about you know what they want in a girl, while yes they do follow some sexist ideals. None of it aligns with what is sung about in Honor To Us All. Yao wants someone to think he’s cool and a badass, Ling wants a pretty girl with pale skin/makeup and bright eyes, while Chien-Po just wants a girl who will make tasty food. Don’t get me wrong. There’s still sexism in there but none of it really lines up with what is said in the song they don’t mention anything about the girl of their dreams having a small waist or good posture or having the right ladylike manners. Meanwhile, Shang straight up falls for her when he thought she was a guy. The young men she’s being taught to impress are completely at odds with the actual young men she meets.
