We have found a gem of a drummer!! I woke up to a beautiful message from one of the Helemu Primary School teachers who said to me “Thank you so much for your donations of drums we are using them now and the learners who were part of the auditions are now doing great as you can see 🙏🙏🙏” & the message that followed was this beautiful video of this primary school lad who literally took me back to when I was 11 years old when I broke into the senior team of Umkhathi Theatre Works where I feature in an hour long production called Ezintabeni Ezimnyama/ The Dark mountains & these are some of the complex rhythms that we played. I had never been to Mashonaland to learn these rhythms & I was taught in a natural/oral way by John Phiri, one of the finest percussionists of his generation. I later learned & started figuring out my own style & patterns. One of the best lessons I got from being at Umkhathi Theatre Works was learning to play rhythms that would otherwise and normally be played by two or more drummers, the reason we did that was because sometimes we would trim the team based on how much work we had & this kid in the video is doing exactly the same with such ease. He makes this drumming thing look like a walk in the park yet, it ain’t. It is with great pleasure that I announce that we have found another Bruce, maybe even a better one, a special talent in Njube & many others (I have been told) that could potential go on to be an established artist. RhyZim School of Percussion is a project that I and my team started and partnered with Helemu Primary School on and together we shall #Qhubeka & do all we can to support these young talented people & hopefully inspire them to be professional musicians. There will be more videos soon!.
