How to break 20mins for 5k effortlessly — EVERY TIME... Two years ago, I used to think running a sub-20min 5k was unreachable. To back up sub-4min kilometres five times in a row felt like it would take years of hard training. But I was wrong. It only took me a few months of smart training to break it — and now, three years later, I’m running 16-flat 5ks as an 800m athlete. Here’s how you can do it too 👇 First, understand that the biggest thing holding you back from improving at your stage is your aerobic capacity — your base fitness. This is the foundation that determines how much endurance you have before your body starts developing lactic acid, which causes your muscles to feel heavy and forces you to slow down. By improving your aerobic base, you’ll be able to run further for longer — but that’s only one side of the equation… If you only run at slow, easy efforts, you’ll train yourself to run further — but not faster. To make sub-20 5k race pace feel comfortable, you need to be running at those speeds and even faster in training. That’s what makes your race pace truly feel easier. Here’s a sample of the weekly program I was following when I first broke 20mins for 5k: MON: 30min Easy Run TUE: Gym (HIIT workout + Core) WED: Kenyan Fartlek (10 x 2min @5k race pace, 1min float) THURS: Gym (Strength + Core) FRI: Rest SAT: Hill Session (6 x 600m FAST, walk-back recovery) SUN: 20min Tempo Run
