I went to the hospital and the receptionist was rude until I told her I was autistic then she was nice. Like be nice first 🥲

Independence is the worst myth, and the ableist notion that needing help is a moral failure is what will destroy humanity. We shouldn't have to disclose our disabilities (and some may not know they are disabled) to be taken seriously, and no one should be afraid to ask for clarification to do something such as their jobs.

My boss recently told me to consider if I'm adding value when I ask a question. I mean, I'm almost 50. If I'm asking a question it's because I need the answer

Allistic people think questions are a challenge to authority, so they don’t ask and get angry if asked. But sometimes (often) they need clarification too, so they’re happy someone else asks…

What I hate that I do all the time is when my kid is stimming/not answering ect and people are looking or seem bothered I say "Sorry she's autistic" Why do I say sorry!? Possibly because I'm British but I am always annoyed with myself after and I am trying really hard not to say it anymore.

The worst is when you say that and they argue that you're not autistic. Me, a special education teacher who has worked with over 1000 autistic families 👀 Literally have a script now for this.

I had to do this with a nurse. she was giving me instructions on asthma medication and the measurements I was supposed to do by myself and the first sentence made no sense. I asked, if she could pause and explain the first point because I have a question. she said no, you can wait untill I have been through all of them. this was the point where I told her I'm autistic and that I can't carry on listening if we don't go through the first question, I won't hear anything and I'm at risk at forgotting what I wanted to know. suddenly she said it's ok and let's go over what I needed and was super nice and respectful. before that, she was annoyed 😄

I’m not autistic but if we have something to do as a group I personally like to talk about exactly what we will do. Most people don’t like that and expect me to just do it. So if they won’t specify how they want me to do it I’ll just do it how it’s easiest for me even if I know it’s not what they wanted. I won’t put effort in something they might not even like

Clarifying questions are helpful for everyone! If someone in a position of power can’t thoroughly explain their request or provide proper instruction they shouldn’t be in that position. And they definitely shouldn’t be rude to people who are simply trying to understand!

Autistic person here. Even if you go to nations that are not capitalistic (and I don’t even consider the US to be capitalistic btw) you’re still going to find yourself in a situation like this. It’s the culture of US stupidity unfortunately the issue here.

I have ptsd as well and it’s so dehumanizing that sometimes I have to tell people about the worst moments of my life to get a tiny bit of accommodation

Seriously — was told I needed to have an approved accessibility waiver because 1 manager (not mine) decided that I was “disorganized” because I was out sick and so wanted to schedule a meeting for Friday and it “had to be Thursday!” (it didn’t).

Yes! I had to wait 7 months for my appointment for diagnosis… there were so many situations that I wanted to blurt out “I’m just autistic!” But nope… had to wait for the actual/real diagnosis. I lost my job when I told my employer…. But honestly, they did me a favor. I was in constant fight or flight mode.

when I was in high school/college, I was always the person who asked for clarification for assignments and no exaggeration, I was hated and known as a "brown-noser" for asking these questions even though I just wanted to know the specifics of what was expected 😭🤷♀

It's because a non autistic person usually can figure out without clarification, so when saying You are on the spectrum non autistic people understand why You don't understand.

This is why I never turn questions away at work, even if it's the 7th time someone asks, because I HATE being treated poorly because I need clarification or support until I disclose my diagnosis...
