@everyone.should.read: Haunted manors, forbidden love, and the power of social class… The Brontë sisters weren’t just writing love stories—they were reshaping culture. Hear how Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights still echo in today’s pop culture on the latest episode of Everyone Should Read 🎧📚 #WutheringHeights #EmilyBronte #classicliterature #BookTok
I don’t recall Nelly framing Cathy’s decision to marry Edward that way. It read more like her getting a taste the Linton lifestyle and wanting that for herself. Not sure where this reading is coming from unless I missed something.

I feel like Snape as a Black man is another can of worms we should talk about. They have added a racist lens to not only Harry’s father and his friends but also the way the 3 main characters are always suspicious of snape. Dumbledore, McGonagall, etc could have been played by anyone but not characters like Snape, Hagrid or Voldemort. It feels like they’re opening up black children to more racism because children are going to see this and think “the good guys” pick on Snape 🤔

As she notes: People might pick up on the nuances of the powers at play in the story if they’d stop casting Heathcliff as white.

Omg this is so true. It also explains why Heathcliffs rage and anger issues r misplaced cuz he has no means for dealing w the structural issues around him. Brilliant

Look… I absolutely love this book, but let’s not pretend that Catherine was anything but a massively selfish and flawed character. Her motives were no doubt complex, but she also knew if she married for money she could have her husband, her money, standing in society, and Heathcliff because she knew the hold she had on him.

ok, good point - saves Kathy from complete selfishness. can someone remind me how Heathcliff becomes rich and then the owner of Wuthering Highs?

I don’t remember it this way when I read it. Heathcliff does some really questionable and even monstrous stuff, but it does come from violence and power. I do agree that heathcliff should be darker or even Romani because it doesn’t make sense for him to be a white passing man

She doesn’t have to marry someone else. She fully agrees to run away with him but her selfish attitude gets in the way. Heathcliff could provide for them, he just needed to get away from the Heights to do it but wouldn’t leave without her

why was this point never discussed in my hs comp class? like we had a heated debate about love at first sight but not about the racism that underlines the whole plot?

Heathcliff is a horrible human being and you see it from his childhood, he deserved all the hate he got, I hate him so much! I wish the author killed him off instead of Kathy that early on, none of the characters would suffer, he is responsible for Edgar, Kathrine jr, Hereton, Linton, Isabella, Kathy and even I would argue Hindley’s suffering. 7 characters suffered because of Heathcliff. He is not the victim, he didn’t know his place and hurt so many people.
