“Point to who is talking! Now point to who should be talking.” Refocuses them.

Sometimes I’ll apologize for being so rude and interrupting their conversations. With sarcasm of course. 😁

“I’ll wait”gives them permission to continue acting that way they never stop it just frustrates those who are trying to do what they are supposed to

I calmly say, “I’m talking.” We learn the first week of school that one person has the floor at a time. If a student is talking with side conversations, I’ll say “Sarah is talking.”

In my experience, this simply does not work for women when you’re young, new to a school or if it is a class with a lot of older teenage boys. And that’s okay. Sometimes you have to do more, sometimes you don’t get the quiet at all. But it comes, especially if you stay in a school long enough and kids know you, and kids siblings know you. Just do not allow yourself to waver on your expectations (that is a mistake I’ve learnt from).

That’s my go to move as well. Also, as females we have to achieve a tone in our voice. That low assertive tone works wonders

Babe. They don’t notice. They don’t care. Unless you call them out, they will just carry on their conversations. Very few have a sense of shame or remorse.

I just tell my 8th graders that the they are only hurting themselves and wasting their time because they won’t have enough time to get their work done and then they’ll have homework. It works!

Sometimes I feel alone in my teaching experience and dealing with these types of behaviors, but then I come on here and don’t feel so alone anymore. It’s crazy that we all share this universal experience.
